N.Z. MARKET IN U.K.
’ In the short term New Zealand could be in for a tough time whether or not Britain went into the Common Market, but in the long term the sun would again shine on this country for the world could not do without its foodstuffs, Mr A. A. Copland, a former New Zealander who has been closely associated with British farming for the last 25 years, said in Timaru this week.
“Whether Britain goes into the Common Market or not New Zealand will have to fight harder for markets,” said Mr Copland. “If Britain gets into the Common Market and gets special terms for New Zealand, New Zealand will stiU find markets harder to get because prices to the consumer will be higher. “If Britain does not get special conditions for New Zealand and still goes in, I do not know what to say, except that this country will be in for a very rough ride. I do not think that there is any question about that. “I think that New Zealand should strain every effort to see that she gets hard and fast guarantees. Britain is fighting for her own economic survival and in my view will make every effort to get into the Market and I believe that she will go in even if she cannot get guarantees for this country. I think that Britain has
got every right to consider her own survival first.” Mr Copland said that he would like to see the guarantees to New Zealand “spelt out loud and clear,” but as far as he was aware no such guarantees had been given yet. It was his view that Britain would be prepared to sacrifice her own farmers if she could . get in, and if she was prepared to do that then the New Zealand farmer could expect a rough ride. But in the long term the sun would shine on New Zeai land again, as it was certain that the world could never do without this country’s produci tion, but there were difficulties in store in the more immedi- ; ate future. I Mr Copland said that he i felt that all of New Zealand’s i effort should be on selling i and not trying to restrict any : market—if a hole was left • anywhere someone else would ; come in and shut it up.
