Mansfield Strong Washdyke Prospect

If Mansfield comes up to expectations at Washdyke today she will solve one major problem for course patrons. It seems likely that Messrs C. H. and P. A. Heywood’s My Chief mare will be a firm favourite for the Salisbury Handicap, first leg of the on-course double at the Timaru Trotting Club’s autumn meeting.

The only weak spot on Mansfield’s record is a sprint failure on this course last month. Beforehand she had had only two starts for a first and a second. In both of these runs —the first at Ashburton and the other at Washdyke—she shaped like a stayer.

Today Mansfield will go two miles. But she could need luck for although she is well drawn she will have to contend with a capacity field. Although Finesse does not appeal greatly as a two-miler she could be the hardest for Mansfield to beat She has last-start form and showed a high standard of fitness by winning at the trials at Methven on Tuesday. Golden Fleece, a last-start winner at Blenheim, could also have solid backing. He is not the most reliable away from the mark, but is a capable pacer once under way.

Silver Strip, a winner at Nelson the start before last Autumn Rain and the consistent Tyrone will be other form prospects. If the winner comes from one of those “out of form” it could be Highflre. Although he finished out of a place he shaped like an early improver by finishing strongly for sixth after giving away starts up to 36 yards in his heat of the maiden event at Methven on Tuesday. The second leg of the course double will be the Timaru Nursery Stakes, in which Good Chase will probably be a firm favourite. The strong form runners with which he will have to contend include Imperial Way, Shepherd's Delight, Lords and Lights Out. Spry and Curragh Dan are fancied for the T.A.B. double, which will be on the Timaru and Wai-itl Handicaps. In the first leg Spry might find Atanul and Doug’s Choice the hardest to beat The best second-leg chances, beside Curragh Dan, will probably be Stereo Scott Warily and Foaming Lass. The forecast is for fine weather so the track will be firm. Fields: FIRST LEG OF ON-COURSB DOUBLB U a.m— SALISBURY HANDICAP, £325; 2m. 812 Autumn Rain (8) .. It. 0508 Boston Billy (2) ..
