Obituary MR R. T. NEWMAN
Mr Robert Thompson Newman, who was closely associated with the trade union movement and the Labour Party in Canterbury and Westland for more than 40 years, has died in Auekland. An Englishman, Mr Newman served in the First World War before coming to New Zealand.
For 10 years he was national president of the Storemen and Packers’ Union, and he was Canterbury president for 17 years. He was a member of the Christchurch Transport Board from 1947 to 1950 and served a term as deputy-chairman. Mr Newman was Labour candidate for the Fendalton seat in the 1949 General Election. • He was also a former president of the New Brighton branch of the U.S.A- and of the Richmond Workingmen’s Club. Mr Newman, who had been in poor health for some years, was 71. He is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.
A.A.C. Membership.—The election of 1543 new members to the Automobile Association (Canterbury) last night brought total membership of the association to 64,660.
