Restrictions On Rugby Tours

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON.

Restrictions on Rugby tours were discussed and a draft resolution for recommendation to the annual meeting adopted, at a meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union council in Wellington yesterday.

Clubs wishing to play matches outside New Zealand may do so only within the period October 1 to March 31 The exception is for school teams making a visit overseas during school holidays and as part of school activities.

Overseas tours by clubs for extended periods or to areas beyond those which could reasonably be regarded as being within the N.Z.R.F.U.’s sphere of influence will not be favoured.

The countries to be visited for which favourable consideration would be given are Australia. Fiji, Tonga,

Samoa, New Caledonia, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, California, British Columbia, or other islands or territories in or bordering the Pacific Ocean. The period of the tour must not exceed three weeks, and appeals, other than to club members, for donations must not be circulated beyond the boundaries of the union to which the club is affiliated. TOUR DECLINED

The council declined an invitation from the New South Wales Union for a side from the Seddon Shield district to tour in September. The chairman (Mr T. C. Morrison) warned that if the union allowed this tour it would be opening the door and a flood of trouble would come from clubs. Mr W. A. Craddock: “But this is not a club matter." Mr Morrison: “We can’t change our policy.’’ NEW SELECTOR The Wellington coach and former All Black, Mr I. M. H. Vodanovich, was elected a New Zealand selector. He displaces Mr D. L. Christian, who has served on the national panel for the last three years The panels elected were;—

New Zealand.—Messrs F. R. Allen (convener), I. Vodanovich and V. L. George. North Island. —Messrs Vodanovich (chairman), Christian and A. J. Paterson.

South Island. —Messrs George (chairman), R. H. Duff and N. P. McGregor.
