HIS LAST CONCERT

When Professor J. A. Ritchie conducts the John Ritchie String Orchestra in Christchurch tonight, it will be his last concert as conductor with the Christchurch Civic Orchestra Foundation.

He said yesterday that the work done by the foundation’s three orhestras had expanded so much in the last two years that there was now a job for a full-time conductor.

Last year he conducted 69 rehearsals and 36 concerts.

“This involved 110 half-days’ work,” he said. “It is too much for a part-time conductor. It’s time I made way for someone who can devote his full attention to the job."
