Decimal Reaction Bad And Good
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Feb. 8. The response of Wellington’s central business community to the Decimal Currency Board’s free teaching programme for the July 10 ehange-over was disappointing, said a spokesman for the board today.
The board sent more than 300 letters to city firms, inviting them to send staff for basic instruction in decimals—but so far only 43 have attended.
The apathy in Wellington was not only surprising, but was already causing great eoneern, he said.
“Elsewhere we have noticed a terrific response to the programme.” A representative of the board started in Picton with 100 present, and in Blenheim extra lectures have had to be arranged. There is a keen demand for souvenir sets of the new currency.
The Treasury has additional staff working every night and over the weekends to handle orders.
It has found a problem with over-ordering, and is keeping strictly to a policy of a limit of three items a person.
