BULL CENTURY-MAKER FOR CANTERBURY

(N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON.

There were runs galore on the first day of the second series of matches in the Rothman’s under-23 cricket tournament at Hamilton yesterday.

Two batsmen compiled centuries'and their teams passed 306.

The day’s top scorer was the Auckland opener, J. Kasper, who in a fine display of controlled aggression, made 154 in 4|hr, and hit 24 boundaries.

With G. E. Vivian helping with a neat half-century and C. Burke and G. Thorne hitting merrily, Auckland declared at 322 for seven. After losing nine wickets, Canterbury declared at the same score, 322, against Central Districts. Canterbury’s century-maker was the opener, C. L. Bull, who batted stylishly for 110 in 4ihr and hit 11 boundaries. For a time Canterbury lagged well behind the clock

but later made up leeway through the efforts of R. M. Gearry, who raced to 70 in 94 minutes,. with two sixes and seven fours, and B. P. Isherwood, who scored 35 in 54 minutes. Another impressive Canterbury batsman was C. L. Broad, who was associated with Bull in a solid second wicket stand of 80. Central collapsed when it began its first innings acd was 19 for four at the close. The Canterbury leg-spinner, J. M. Mclntyre, took three cheap wickets. With G. M. Turner fighting hard for 70 in three hours, Otago batted laboriously for 167 off 116 overs against Wellington. Scores: CANTERBURY First Innings C. L. Bull, c and b Baker 110 I. M.
