Licensing Polls
Sir,—Your editorial, “Democracy Is Worth Paying For,” referring to the Southern Maori electorate, has other applications. Your argument is that a foregone conclusion is no good reason for neglecting the machinery of democracy; that it is not too expensive. I recall the Prime Minister’s reference to the November liquor licensing vote as an anachronism and newspaper editorials describing it as a triennial farce. Protection of democratic procedures in liquor licensing (we have few of them since 1962) is at least as important as the Maori by-election, and I plead
with newspapers to join churches, trade unions, and individuals who are urging the Government to provide a ballot paper that uses words we can understand, alternatives that are logical, and a system where votes are of equal value. Government thwarts democratic voting by retaining the 49-year-old paper. , It does not allow a vote on publie ownership control. Why the timidity.—Yours, etc., PHILLIP RAMSAY. February 8, 1967.
