ROCKER FINED
Term On Jacket
(N.Z. Press Association}
AUCKLAND, Feb. 7.
An Auckland youth who wore a blue denim jacket with the words “Mod killing Rocker” painted in large lettering across the back was fined £6 10s by Mr H. Rosen, SM, at Otahuhu yesterday, for offensive behaviour. He was also fined £6 for the theft of petrol from a garage. The Magistrate ordered the jacket to be destroyed. Senior-Sergeant L. O’Neill said that Wayne Kerr, aged 17, an unemployed fitter welder, told the police when he was arrested that he was a member of the Rocker group. He had put the words on his jacket after seeing reports of a Christchurch youth wearing a similar term. Senior-Sergeant O’Neill said he believed the term had been found offensive by a South Island court.
Kerr was wearing the jacket when arrested on February 6 with his brother when they were apprehended stealing petrol from a garage. Kerr pleaded guilty to both charges.
