Plan To Co-ordinate All N.Z. Swimming

A revolutionary outline plan designed to shape the future development of all aspects of swimming in New Zealand was presented to the council of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association last evening.

The plan runs the gamut of all activities from learn • to - swim classes to Olympic training squads.

The plan is designed on a two-yearly cycle; the end of each cycle is represented by a Commonwealth or an Olympic Games. “We have created a cycle which can continue, with

modifications, for many years to come,” said the chairman of the council (Mr A. J. Donaldson). Future Development While recognising that swimming in the Dominion has developed substantially in the last five years, the plan looks forward to definite and clear development in the future. Development has been proceeding under several headings and now all have been grouped into one coordinated plan. Taking teaching-to-swim and water safety as a starting point, the plan provides for this to be a continuing matter involving clubs and centres every month of the year. Coupled with this, the plan provides for the development of better teaching of school pupils within the school—to be accomplished through the education authorities and the physical education department.

The plan embraces club, centre, district and national age group competitions, the instruction of coaches and

swimming teachers and the holding of two schools a year for swimmers to improve their standards.

National Squad

At a certain stage a national squad would emerge and from this squad would come the overseas representatives and leading competitors.

The council decided to accept the plan for distribution to centres and clubs after the deputy-chairman (Mr G. S. Brockett) said that a co-ordinating conference would be held on May 6, 7. and 8.

The conference would produce in detail the training schedules for instructors, coaches and swimmers for the first two-year period. The council could carry out the first two of the eight stages in the outline plan with money in hand, said Mr Brockett. By then the coffers would be empty and the cost of the subsequent stages would come from funds from the £1 registration fee.
