Expansion Of Hillmorton High School Discussed

The Regional Superintendent of Education (Mr S. S. P. Hamilton) met the Hillmorton High School’s board of governors last evening and discussed the school’s expansion. The matter was taken in committee.

In his report to the board, the headmaster (Mr P. W. Murdoch) said that by putting into use the two old prefabricated classrooms, supplied by the Department of Education at the beginning of last year, all classes could be accommodated.

“But I am most concerned at the deadlock over the proposed library site, as this is holding up the provision of an adequate library,” he said. Mr Murdoch expressed the hope that the board’s meeting with Mr Hamilton would clarify matters considerably. Mr Murdoch said in his re-

port that he was dissatisfied with the method of announcing this year’s university scholarship examination results, and would like to put this on record.

“The local newspapers carried the first intimation of results, no personal notification being sent to candidates before the publication of results,” he said. “I feel this is quite unfair. In all other public examinations personal notification is received before the public announcement.” Mr Murdoch also said that since the acceptance of the tender by Haughton Brothers for the school’s new gymnasium, progress had been pleasing. The estimated time of completion was the end of May or early June. The board was told that because of resignations from four teachers going overseas, and the roll increase, it was necessary to appoint nine new teachers. Girls at the school will discontinue to wear panama hats for summer uniform. They were unsatisfactory for a variety of reasons, Mr Murdoch said, and he was sure that berets would be much more practical.
