Porridge

Sir, —Gardner Miller’s delightful article on Saturday prompts me to relate this yarn oft retold by my Scottish father to his English wife’s disgust. A young Scot on his return from a sea voyage with some Sassenach friends describes the highlight of the trip when the ship ran into a gale: “Mon, it was grand; they were all sick in turn and up came potatoes, peas, carrots, tomatoes, cherries, plums, and all kinds of rich fare. Then I felt my stomach rising and ran for the side, for well I knew it would be nothing but parridge, parridge, ... and more parridge.”—Yours, etc, R. C. S. DICK.

February 6, 1967. A.A.C. Billiards Room

Sir,—Mr Habgood is a little out of touch when he infers that those present at the meeting were "in support of our cause.” I have had the privilege of enjoying many games in the A.A. room, yet the action to close it has my fullest support. Please note I use the word “privilege,” for no other Automobile Association, either in New Zealand or overseas, has a billiards room or any social activity included as if by right. To think that a very small minority would endeavour to change a decision which has been made by the council in the interests of the total membership is nothing short of cheek. I am quite sure the council’s decision was not made hastily and commend them for it I hope A.A.

(Canterbury) will continue its high standard of service and put the upstairs “old people’s home” to much better use.—Yours,'etc, A. PFAHLERT. February 6, 1967.
