IN BRIEF No Arms Issued
No firearms were issued to any member of the New Zealand police during the visit of Air Vice-Marshal Ky, the Press Association reported.
Some members of the police complained to a newspaper that in view of the possible personal danger police were placed in during the visit, this was a wrong decision. At least those men appointed to Air Vice-Marshal Ky’s personal bodyguard should have been armed.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr C. L. Spencer, said the police were ordinarily unarmed and he saw no reason, just because of the Ky visit, to alter this.
South Vietnamese security officers were aware of what arrangements were made for the visit and had expressed themselves satisfied with them.
Had there been any need to recourse to arms, they were available, said Mr Spencer.
Scouts Gain Wings
About 23 scouts from the world’s first venturer flying school at Wharoa, near Matamata, have now gained the senior flying badge and air scout wings. These are scouting awards given for the ability to fly solo and are not connected with civil aviation awards. Testaments
All recruits to the armed forces will receive a bound copy of the New Testament and Psalms in the revised standard version from the British and Foreign Bible Society (New Zealand).
Missing In Bush Police will decide today whether to mount a full-scale search for Alexander Edwin Jensen, aged 55, who is believed to have been missing in the lower Tararua ranges since Tuesday. He went into the bush alone last Saturday and was due back at work on Tuesday morning.
Service Housing The Minister of Defence (Mr Thomson) yesterday expressed his concern about the inadequacy of accommodation for servicemen throughout New Zealand. He was visiting defence establishments in Auckland.
