PROTESTERS REMANDED

AUCKLAND, January 26

Ten people appeared in Court today before Mr H. Jenner Wily, S.M., on charges arising out of incidents during last night’s demonstrations against Air Vice-Marshal Ky’s visit to Auckland.

One youth was appearing for a second time on similar charges. He was Patrick Barney Sheerin, aged 18, a mechanic. Yesterday he was among the 11 charged after incidents when Air Vice-Marshal Ky arrived in Auckland on Tuesday night. On that occasion he was charged with disorderly behaviour.

Today he was charged with assaulting Constable R. P. R. Graham and wilfully damaging sun glasses valued at £l, the property of Brian Philip Kemp.

He was remanded until February 1. The other nine charged today were remanded until February 2. Bail Granted No pleas were entered. All were granted bail on their own recognisance of £5O. Charged with disorderly behaviour in Albert street were Timothy Richard Shadbolt, aged 19, a student; Alan Bruce Thorpe, aged 29, a waterside worker; William Rangitara Hamilton, aged 28, a storeman; and Robert McMilland, aged 30, a painter. McMilland was also charged with being found on a building in Albert street without lawful excuse.

Alexander Campbell, aged 42, was charged with using indecent language in a public place. Stanley Hooper Hieatt, aged 52, a railway worker, was charged with resisting a constable and with wilfully obstructing the constable. Patrick Kevin Blake, aged 50, a merchant seaman, was charged with assaulting Michael Gryther Charles. Mr F. H. Haigh appeared for the .eight men. Mr N’. J. Eliott appeared for John McKay Graham, aged 21, a student, and Barry Curtis Allan, aged 20, a student, who were also charged with disorderly behaviour in Albert street.

The police offered no objection to the remands. Three demonstrators who were arrested by police during Air Vice-Marshal Ky’s visit to Hamilton yesterday, will appear in Court tomorrow at 10 a.m.

Two men, one aged 30 and the other 19 years, will appear in the Hamilton Magistrate’s Court before Mr Stewart Hardy, S.M., on a charge of behaving in a disorderly manner.

A 16-year-old youth will appear in the Children’s Court on a similar charge.
