Small Fire On Bank Building

A small fire which broke out on the penthouse section of the new Bank of New Zealand building in Cathedral square about noon yesterday caused only minor damage. A spark from welding being done on the water-cooling tower in the penthouse section ignited plasticimpregnated wood. Workmen using a garden hose had put out the fire before the three machines sent from the Central Fire Station arrived.

About 60ft of gorse hedge at the premises of Doring Implements Supplies, Ltd., 211 Main South road, was destroyed by fire yesterday. One machine from Sockburn and one from Sydenham answered the call received at 2.22 p.m. A small grass fire on a reserve at Corsair Bay belonging to the Lyttelton Borough Council caused no damage. Two machines from Lyttelton answered the call, which was received at 2.56 p.m.
