23 Sold, 49 Passed In

Southdown rams met a poor sale at the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s seventeenth annual stud ram and ewe fair today. Of the 79 rams in the catalogue, only 23 were sold, 49 being passed in and seven withdrawn. Four lots of Southdown ewes—five ewes to a lot—entered by J. A. Brown, of Oamaru, also failed to reach the reserve price. The 23 rams sold by auction brought 2765gn5., an average of little more than 120gns. For a single ram sold out of four entered, D. C. McMillan, of Irwell, Canterbury, received 175gns. This ram went to Feilding.
F. E. Holroyd, of Wrights Bush, Southland, sold the top-priced ram at 240gns, and for four rams he averaged 1635gns. A. D. Wyllie and Sons, of Amberley, sold three rams at an average price of just above 113gns. The top-priced Wyllie ram was bought by C. Jackson, of Christchurch, for 150gns.
R. G. Richards, of Waimate, who had four rams entered, sold two—one going to Neil Mclntosh, of Christchurch, for lOOgns. F. W. Jarman, of Darfield, entered six rams. Two were sold at auction for lOOgns and 70gns. J. C. Medlicott and Son (Waimate) sold, two rams at lOOgns each, and N. J. Early and E. A. Lock (Ashburton) one at 60gns.
James Petrie and Son, of Rangiora, entered five rams, but all were passed in, and the two rams entered by R. J Low and Son, of Methven, were also passed in at 50gns.
