Dangerous Journey
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Jan. 26.
Lashed by strong winds and high seas that almost swept her overboard, a 16-year-old schoolgirl yesterday sailed her 15ft yacht single-handed from Kawau Island to her home at Bucklands Beach a distance of 43 miles. The daring, but dangerous voyage took Jackie Hope, of Te Akau crescent. Bucklands Beach. 14 hours, including three “lost” hours exhausted and asleep on Rangitoto island beach.
Today she had only a
slightly sprained ankle and angry, but relieved parents to remind her of yesterday’s experience. Although she swears never to set out in her small cruising yacht again, Jackie has dreams of sailing to Australia and perhaps one day of circumnavigating the world. “There were many times yesterday when I thought the huge waves were going to sweep me overboard or swamp my boat,” said Jackie today. “Yet my only concern was for the boat, and my transistor radio—it was my only companion.”
