Sth Canty Takes Lead
*N.Z. Press Association) GORE. l -cause of rain, play in the South Island primary schools’ cricket tournament did not begin until after lunch yesterday. The highlight of play was the game between two of the leading teams, Central Otago and Canterbury. After an impressive start, Central Otago slumped and the innings closed late in the afternoon at 145 for seven. This left Canterbury only 86 minutes to score 146 runs, and with enterprising batting it won with a few minutes to spare.
At the end of the fourth day the leading team was South Canterbury, followed closely by Canterbury and Nelson. Results:
North Canterbury beat Eastern Southland. Eastern Southland 84 (Fidden 5/48, North Canterbury 125 (Clark 24, Devlin 22, Marshall 28; Kitto 1/10, Hill 1/15).
South Canterbury beat Marlborough. South Canterbury 63 (Henaghan 15; Neal 5/19, McLel lan 2/18), Marlborough 41 (Fuller 11; O’Hara 3/8, Bradley 3/14).
Otago beat Ashburton. Ashburton 54 (Neuman 23; Smale 3/11, Gavigan 2/3), Otago 110 (Bird 5/26, Argyle 3/27).
Nelson drew with Southland. Southland 126/8 dec., Nelson 85/5 (Wild 33. Cook 20; McKechnie 2/19).
Canterbury beat Central Otago. Central Otago 145/7 dec. (Lee 4/8, Rule 2/37), Canterbury 151 (Thomson 78, McWhirter 26; Hills 4/30).
