Field Of 25 In Marathon
A representative section of Canterbury’s leading distance runners will be among a field of 25 who have entered for the Canterbury marathon championship, to be run from Rugby Park on Saturday. The race, of 26 miles and 385 yards, will be run over a four-lap course in the Innes road, Prestons road, Hills road area, instead of an out-and-back course as last year. This will make for more convenient control. The present New' Zealand title-holder. D McKenzie, should retain his Canterbury title although a leg injury may preclude his producing an exceptionally fast time.
There should be competition among W K. Kennedy (Christchurch), R. Alcorn (Methodist), I Sim and B. Turner (Shirley) for the minor placings. D. Grey (Technical), R. McMillan (South Canterbury) and M. Poulton (Christchurch) are also capable of returning gqod times. Christchurch appears to be the probable winner of the teams’ race. Three runners aged over 50 have entered for the race. The field is:— L. Fox (Olympic), I. Tolly (Ashburton), R. McMillan (South Canterbury), R. Grant (Toe H), P. Morris (Toe H), D. Cameron (Marist) M. Poulton, W Kennedy, R. Fleming, R. Green, T. Bain, J. Perry (all of Christchurch), I. Sim (Shirley). B. Turner (Shirley). L. Hand (South Canterbury), D. Greig, R. Hayes, J. Taylor, A. Evans (all of Technical). D. McKenzie. F. Pendlebury (Greymouth), P. Morel (Marist), R. Alcorn (Methodist), J. Drew (St. Martins).
