Advancement Of Maoris

Sir, —The report in this morning's paper about the lack of advancement- by the Maoris prompts me to write to you about the attitude of a friend who is responsible for engaging staff for a factory. This man has told me that he deplores the attitude of the South Africans to Bantu and coloured races, and that he thinks lan Smith of Rhodesia is wrong in his policies. But whenever a Maori or Islander applies to my friend for a vacant position, he or she is told that the position is filled. In answer to my query why, he told me that he didn’t like coloured people because from his experience they were not to be relied

upon. Truly, experience is a great master.—Yours, etc., WHITE ROSE. January 23, 1967.
