Conveniences At Redcliffs

Sir, —Perhaps through your columns we could stir up either the City Council or the Health Department. Two years ago last Christmas there was a tragic accident, which caused a man’s death and demolished the conveniences at the corner of Main road and Cave terrace. Although the council has been approached, nothing has so far been done. The only “convenience” there now is a clump of bushes at the back of a garage. Have the residents no pride in their district? 1 know that at present money is difficult, but surely, enough could be found to do this vital piece of work. It could and will become a public menace if it is not attended to promptly. —Yours, etc., R. JENKIN. January 9, 1967. [Mr P. G. Scoular, City Engineer of the Christchurch City Council, replies: “The replacement of the conveniences has been delayed because the insurance claim arising from the accident has not been settled and the council provided only a small sum on the estimates to meet the difference between the estimated cost and the value of the existing conveniences. A recommendation will be made to the works committee that the council proceed with the reconstruction independently of the insurance claim—the settlement of which now looks as if it will be somewhat protracted.”]
