General News

Mr Holyoake’s Stick A gift from Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, has found its way into the spotlight this week. The present is a walking stick which the Tunku gave to the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake). Since pulling a tendon in his leg on Monday night, Mr Holyoake has relied on that walking stick and used it when he accompanied Marshal Ky during his Wellington visit. The stick is made of small rectangles of woods indigenous to Malaysia, each wood being identified in gold lettering.—(P.A.) Third Million The three-millionth vehicle passed through the Christ-church-Lyttelton road tunnel at 9 a.m. on Monday, said the general manager of the Road Tunnel Authority (Mr L. H. Wilson) yesterday. The vehicle was a van driven by Mr A. Gordon, of Christchurch, he added. The third million took 314 days to pass through the tunnel, compared with 391 days for the first million, and 357 days for the second. The tunnel was opened on February 27, 1964. Rural Rights An example of the false ideas some persons have of their rights was given by Mr J. W. Overton during a discussion on trespass at a meeting of the executive of North Canterbury Federated Farmers yesterday. One person, he said, had asked him to move a bull from one of his paddocks, as the bull was interfering with the gathering of mushrooms.

Warm And Windy

Except for the brief thunderstorm at 3 p.m. yesterday, the weather in Christchurch was warm and windy. A maximum temperature of 75 degrees was recorded at Harewood at 1 p.m. The 6 a.m. temperature of 60 degrees had risen to 65 degrees at 9 a.m. and 72 degrees at noon, but by 3 p.m. the temperature had dropped to 63 degrees. A moderate to fresh northwesterly wind blew until midafternoon, when it changed to the south-west. By 4 p.m. the wind was again from the north-west and the temperature rose. The temperature in the Botanic Gardens was 62 degrees at 3 p.m. and the Government Life building temperature gauge showed 69 degrees at 4.30 p.m.

Closing Day

More than 8000 persons have visited the Selwyn street home of Mr R. H. Stillwell, who decorates it for Christmas every year and has displays as well as open-air films and television. Mr Stillwell, who opened his show on December 15, has decided that next Sunday will be the closing day and that he will then dismantle all the decorations and give his time to local body affairs instead of entertainment The entertainment has not interfered greatly with his public duties, but it did keep him away from the Mayoral welcome to the South Vietnam Prime Minister (Air Vice-Marshal Ky). If it had not been for his audience, he would have been there, Mr Stillwell said. As a Labour councillor he did not agree with Air Vice-Marshal Ky’s policy, but he thought he should have been welcomed by all councillors.

Sections Sold

Two sections at Rolleston were sold at public auction yesterday by Ford and Hadfield, Ltd. A quarter-acre section in Byron street realised £225, and a half-acre section in John street brought £335. The auctioneer was Mr Denys Chapman.
