Nelson In Lead (N.Z. Press Association) GORE. Rain delayed the start of play yesterday, the third day of the South Island primary schools’ cricket tournament at Gore. Play resumed after lunch and was extended to 6 p.m. The restricted time did not permit a result in all games. The winning teams were Nelson, South Canterbury, and Canterbury. With two days’ play remaining, Nelson holds a slender lead over Central Otago and South Canterbury. Results: —

South Canterbury beat Southland. South Canterbury 93 (Sewell 22, Bradley 26: Brown 8/25), Eastern Southland 88.

Nelson beat Ashburton. Nelson 164/6 declared (Schwass 76 not out, Wild 52: McPhail 3/28), Ashburton 83 (Hood 12, Bird 28, Chatterton 14; Aberhart 4/14, Kelly 4/11). Central Otago and Southland drew. Central Otago 93/8 declared, Southland 39/8.

North Canterbury drew with Marlborough. North Canterbury 116/6 declared (Hidden 23, Hay 34, Abbott 17 not out, Wright 19; Neale 4/45, Bowe 2/30), Marlborough 61/9 (Schroder 17: Marshall 3/22, Clark 2/10).

Canterbury beat Otago. Canterbury 120 (McWhirter 53 not out; Ayres 6/23, Broad 3/44), Otago 86 (Willis 22, Ayres 25).
