FRUIT TO ITALY
Apricots By Air (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, Jan. 24. The first of six consignments, totalling one ton and a half of apricots, will leave Central Otago on Thursday for a jet trip to Rome. They will reach Rome on Sunday. About 5501 b of apricots will be air-freighted in each of the six consignments. They will be brought by rail to Dunedin, flown to Christchurch, transhipped to Air New Zealand and Qantas flights for the Tasman trip, and flown by Alitalia, Italy’s overseas airline, from Sydney to Rome. The Central Otago manager of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation (Mr B. Lindsay) of Roxburgh, said yesterday that the fruit was for the luxury market in Italy. It was expected that the apricots would sell for up to 17s a lb—about 3s 6d each.
