CAUGHT IN RIP

New Brighton Rescue A Christchurch nurse, Miss P. O’Neill, was rescued after she and another nurse got into difficulties in the water at New Brighton beach early on Saturday afternoon. Both were about 75 yards outside the patrolled area. Her companion reached the shore unaided.

Miss O’Neill got out of her depth in a strong undertow, and was brought in by New Brighton Surf Life-saving Club patrolmen. She was in distress, but soon recovered. This was the only incident reported by the six surf clubs in the Christchurch area during the week-end. All beaches were popular yesterday afternoon, more so than on Saturday, and especially after 4.30 p.m., when the sky cleared. The surf was generally good, with rollers of more than sft at Taylor’s Mistake, Waimairi, and South Brighton.

Sumner reported small surf but crowds of swimmers, more than 200 being on the beach for most of the day. South Brighton had the largest crowd for some considerable time.

New Brighton reported the water as chilly with small surf but, as on Saturday, there were crowds on the beach. North Beach was warm and popular in the afternoon but was cool in the morning, with a moderate south-easterly wind. The surf at Waimairi was much bigger in the morning than later in the day.
