Monowai And Avon Have Easy Wins

In the first round of games in the women’s senior softball competition after the holidays, Monowai and Avon had little difficulty in winning their matches. Better batting and fielding contributed largely to their wins. Results: Monowai 20, Christchurch West 4. Avon 14, Spreydon 7. Spreydon v. Avon M. May opened Spreydon’s scoring in its first innings when she scored on an overthrow. P. Hall and M. Draper after being walked ran the bases well and scored on a fielder’s choice and a hit by H. Diggs respectively. Spreydon was scoreless to good fielding in its next two innings but fought back in its fourth when errors and good hits by S. Marsh and P. Hall brought in three runs. Spreydon then scored, M. May following an outfield catch. Poor fielding and an outfield catch allowed Avon to score two runs in the first innings. Scoreless in the second Avon again took advantage of errors and with good batting by S. Chamberlain and N. Hands scored five runs. Poor fielding in the next two Innings played its part in allowing Avon to score five runs to take a good hold on the game. It its sixth and last innings Avon, with J. Baker and B. Haningan scored four runs to win 14-7.

Monowai v. Christchurch West Monowai started well, hits by B. Makinson, M. Hapuku, L. Leask, B. Turbott, a Makinson home run and hard drives, enabled 11 runners to score in its first innings. An overthrow allowed E. Law to score in its fifth. A home run by N. Beale and hits by E. Hobson, Makinson and Turbott and sharper base running helped Monowai to score eight runs in its sixth and last bat to win 20-4.

A homer on errors by J. Davies brought in West’s only run of the first. Scorless in the next two innings K. Norman hit a homer in the fourth and J. Patterson scored. A hit by L. Lydiate started West’s fifth in good style but with the next batter caught out a fine catch by B. Makinson. who relayed to B. Turbott for the double play, ended the innings. Results: — Second Grade. —Vanguard 9, Monowai A 3; Monowai B 12, Christchurch West 8; Western Suburbs 7, Kaiapoi 0. Third Grade.—Avon 7, Christchurch West 0; Monowai 14, Templeton 14;
