STAKES WIN
Floodlit By Neck (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON. Floodlit, a handsome colt by the brilliant Australian sire, Wilkes, outfinished the two-year-old, Le Danois, to win the Wellington Stakes at Trentham on Saturday. Le Danois started 15 wide and Floodlit started from one ot the inside barrier positions, but when they were in a sustained battle in the straight Floodlit was fairly well out on the track and the Wanganui colt was alongside the inside rail. Floodlit won by a long neck. Game, the place favourite, was third in a gap of three lengths, two places ahead of Britannicus, which ran erratically and finished close to the outside fence. Barellan tired after pacemaking and finished fourth. Floodlit is trained at Hastings by K. Couper for Mr W. R. Stead, proprietor of the Sasanof Stud, in Hawke’s Bay. Floodlit and his dam, Cabonne (Summertime—Granada), were both bred by Mr Stead. Cabonne was sent to Australia in 1955 to be mated with Star Kingdom, and her foal was Starlit, a brilliant sprinting filly. Cabonne was brought back to New Zealand to foal Starlit, but returned to Australia in May, 1962, and was covered by Wilkes in the following season. She was brought back to New Zealand. where she foaled Saturday’s Wellington Stakes winner. Record By Quezette (Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) MELBOURNE. The New Zealand-bred filly Quezette slashed three-tenths of a second off the Australian and New Zealand five furlongs record ,when she won the Starlet Stakes in 56 2-ssec at Sandown Park on Saturday. Quezette, a two-year-old daughter of the successful New Zealand first-season stallion, Test Case, won by a length from Nancaro (5/4 favourite) and Acacia Star (12/1) four lengths away third.
