SARJEANT, Town Clerk. ■5171 MARLBOROUGH COUNTY COUNCIL PUBLIC NOTICE PROPERTY owners in the Marlborough Sounds are reminded of the implications of the Forest and Rural Fires Act, 1955, in connexion with the removal of combustible material from the precincts of building sections. Clause 24 (2) of the Forest and Rural Fires Act, 1955, states: “The Fire Authority of any district may, at any time by notice in writing signed on its behalf by a Fire Officer, require the owner of any land in the district whic his subdivided into allotments for the purpose of sale or from building purposes either before or after the passing of this act or which has an area of less than two acres, to remove at his own cost from that land, such grass, stubble, weeds, scrub, undergrowth, rubbish or other material of whatsoever kind as in the opinion of the Fire Authority should be removed in order to prevent or minimise the risk of the spreading of fire in that area.” In order to avoid the close and stringent application of the above clause it is suggested that landowners could improve the position by the voluntary removal of combustible material such as gorse, bracken, manuka or dry herbage for at least one chain around buildings as a reasonable fire safeguard. Where indigenous evergreens are present removal is unlikely to be sought. BASIL HUNDLEBY, Chief Rural Fire Officer. 5158
