Resignation Over News Handling

(N.ZJP.A.-Reuter— Copyright) SALISBURY, January 22. Mr Frank Mealing last week announced his resignation aS assistant head of news at the Rhodesian Broadcasting Commission because he objected to Government interference in handling news programmes.

He said he decided to quit after he was reprimanded for allowing an item to be broadcast last November 11—the anniversary of Rhodesia’s Independence seizure—reporting that many Rhodesians had signed the visitors book at Government House. Mention of Government House, or the Governor, Sir Humphrey Gibbs—who is not

recognised by the Smith Government—is not made in Salisbury on radio or television and is usually censored from newspapers. Mr Mealing left the Rhodesia Broadcasting Commission the previous week. He said he intended to emigrate to Canada and return to his former occupation as a schoolteacher.
