OTAGO FAILS, 312 BEHIND NORTHERN

(New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON. Northern Districts ended the second day of its Plunket Shield cricket match against Otago at Hamilton, in a commanding position.

After leading by 137 runs on the first innings, Northern was 175 for four at close of play and 312 runs ahead. The key performers in Northern’s concerted effort were the off-spin bowler, N. Puna, and the batsmen, W. J. Mitchell and P. D. Sloane. Puna had admirable control .throughout his 24 overs which brought him six wickets for 25 runs and sent Otago sliding to 94 all out in reply to Northern’s 231. Puna was able to get appreciable turn from the pitch and was ably supported by the left-arm spinner, K. D. Kennedy. Apart from K. Ibadulla and G. M. Turner, who had a solid second-wicket partnership, the Otago batting was not convincing. When four Northern sec-

ond innings wickets had fallen for 68 the game was hanging in the balance, but with enterprising batting, marked by controlled aggression and good running between the pushed the score ahead. Mitchell scored slylishly in an impressive display, while Stone endorsed the fine form which brought him a half century in the first innings. They shared an unbeaten century partnership at better than a run a minute.
