Sunshine Hours Below Average In December
December’s weather showed a considerable improvement over the previous month, although sunshine was 25 hours short of the monthly average of 220 hours, reports the Meteorological Office at Christchurch Airport. Rainfall for the month was 1.55 inches on eight days at the airport, compared with the average of 2.33 inches.
At the Botanic Gardens, 1.66 inches fell on 10 days. At the airport the monthly average is 11 days. More than one-third of the rainfall was a downpour of .63 inches at the airport, and .71 inches at the Botanic Gardens on December 10. Although December was generally unsettled and cool, the mean temperature equalled the monthly average of 60 degrees at both the airport and the Botanic Gardens, with a highest reading of 86 degrees on December 14 at the airport. Eighty-one degrees on December 1 was the highest at the Botanic Gardens.
Both places registered the lowest temperature of 40 degrees on December 7.
