Golf Course Shaping Up
r A SECTION of Queen Eli- " zabeth II Park which was a wilderness of gorse and broom six feet high 12 months ago now has all the appearances of a well tailored golf course. The transformation of the undeveloped portion of the old New Brighton racecourse
has been most marked. Twelve holes, covering an area of about 15 acres, have been formed and there is a
possibility that this portion of the municipal par-three course will be opened for play in the late autumn. All the holes are serviced by a comprehensive watering system for tees, fairways and greens. The mounds which have been constructed around the greens are stabilising and some bunkers will be fashioned before play commences. A good many trees have been planted; more plantings are planned. Regular mowings and applications of fertiliser have aided the establishment of the greens, but it takes time for grass roots to get down. Not until then will the greens provide a suitable sward for putting. The plan provided by South Pacific Golf, Ltd., has been adhered to as far as possible in the construction of the course.
The opening of the first portion of the course will leave six boles in more difficult country to be constructed. This area contains a lake, which, will be incorporated into three of the holes.
