ABATTOIR HALTS
Killing Likely Today
“The workers should be back tomorrow. The situation has not got to the dispute stage,” said Mr K. R. Churchward, the assistant managing director of Canterbury ByProducts, Ltd., when he was asked to comment last evening on a stoppage of work at the Christchurch City Council's abattoir yesterday. Mr Churchward said that the stoppage resulted from a Department of Agriculture direction that the manner of opening carcases be altered, because the present method was not hygienic. Dr. J. G. Fowler, for the Department of Agriculture, said that carcases were being opened before being skinned, and any subsequent movement of the wool could shake dirt into the meat.
“It is a semi-domestic matter,” said Mr S. Arnst, secretary of the Canterbury Freezing Workers’ Union. “It has all been ironed out today. It is just a matter of a slight change of method.” He expected that work would resume this morning.
