MAJOR LUCA

Scratching Ordered “The Press” Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH. The last-minute withdrawal of the Challenge Cup candidate, Major Luca, was a surprise to racegoers at Tauherendkau on Saturday. The gelding had been regarded as a leading prospect for the first leg of the Wairarapa Racing Club’s double.

However, club officials were not surprised when they received an order from the Racing Conference to prevent the galloper from starting. A good deal of official interest has been shown in the horse lately and the chances are that an inquiry into the ownership of the five-year-old will be opened soon by the Conference. An announcement was made at the course that Major Luca was a compulsory scratching and the official report gave little extra information, except that the conditions of the scratching were such that no action would be taken regarding the late hour at which it occurred.

It is expected that the Racing Conference will make a further statement regarding Major Luca in a few days.
