HANDICAP WINNER

Aust. Boat First

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) HOBART.

The little Sydney sloop, Cadence, had been declared provisional handicap winner in the 640-mile SydneyHobart yacht race, the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania announced yesterday. A club spokesman said none of the yachts still to finish the race could now beat Cadence on handicaps! But the result would not be officially announced until all yachts had passed the finishing line. Cadence finished early yesterday morning. The 31ft sloop is owned and skippered by the Sydney yachtsman, J. Mason, who has now won most of the major Australian yachting events. Cadence was third in last year’s Sydney-Hobart race. The provisional second place-getter is the 33ft Sydney sloop, Salome, with Tamboo, a 35ft sloop from Victoria, third. Line honours in the annual blue water classic went to New Zealand’s 61ft sloop, Fidelis.

The Admiral’s Cup entrant, Balandra, was second, and the 50ft Sydney sloop, Bacchus D, third.
