SEA CADET CAMP
More Than 80 To Attend
More than 80 sea cadets, from Wellington, Nelson, Canterbury, and Dunedin will attend a training camp on board the training ship Fort Jervois, Ripa Island, from January 3 to January 13.
The camp, run under the auspices of the New Zeaiand Naval Board, will be commanded by Lieutenant-Com-mander M. W. Murnane. R.N.Z.N.V.R.. the commanding officer of the training ships Fort Jervois and Cornwell. Two Navy cooks and a sick berth attendant from H.M.N.Z.S. Philomel will also attend.
Part of the training will include three-day, 30-mile tramps on Banks Peninsula to qualify cadets for the silver series of projects for the Duke of Edinburgh award. Other training includes sailing and pulling in two 27ft whalers and four 17ft sailing skiffs, rigging, shooting, signalling, map reading, firstaid, fire-fighting, an assault course, and parade training. The cadets’ day will begin at 6 a m. and end with “turn in and pipe down” at 9 p.m. A jackstay transfer over a 180 ft wire rope will connect the island with the mainland. On January 8 the chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board (Mr L. G. Amos) will inspect the camp, and parents and friends may visit the camp in the afternoon.
