Power Rationing At Scott Base

(New Zealand Press Association) SCOTT BASE, December 29. An unwanted aspect of civilisation has hit the Antarctic. Scott Base is having power restrictions'.

Two new diesel generators are being installed at Scott Base and during the change all possibile electric power is being drawn from small stand-by generators. At times during the day all electrical equipment is restricted while the radio transmitters are used to communicate with field parties and New Zealand. However, the new generators will produce about half as much power again as the old ones.

The Ministry of Works overseer in charge of replacing the generators, Mr J. L. Grimwood, of Wellington, says the job should be completed early in the New Year. With him are two Ministry of Works diesel engineers, Messrs P. McKane, of Nelson, and N. Gilmar, of Wellington, and an electrician, Mr B. Judd, of Wellington, who spent two weeks at Scott Base from 1963.
