LAUNCH SET ADRIFT
Men Fined £l5 Each (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 21. Two young men who cast off the mooring lines of the £17,000 launch Pakatoa were each fined £l5 by Mr A. A. Coates, S.M., today. Joseph Thomas Guy, aged 17. ship’s catering boy, and Phillip John Jones Furnish, aged 19, assistant steward, pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawfully interfering with Sergeant C. H. Shearwood, prosecuting, said that at 12.10 ajn. today a constable saw the two on Marsden wharf interfering with the Pakatoa which is used for passenger services. He saw Guy cast off a stem line. He chased the two and found them hiding under a building. Meanwhile the launch drifted backwards and struck a yacht winch was moored behind. Neither boat was damaged. Both defendants had been drinking, said Sergeant Shearwood. Guy told the police that it was a “very silly thing to do” and Furnish said it was just a “foolish prank.” The Magistrate said that although the two may have been affected by liquor that ’was excuse.
