Woman Inspector

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 20.

Senior-Sergeant E. F. Bennett, of Auckland, who has been promoted to inspector, becomes the first woman commissioned officer in the New Zealand police.

Four years ago she was awarded the British Empire Medal for her police work. She was the first woman to become sergeant and senior-ser-geant

She completed her officer’s examination earlier this year. She joined the police in 1955, served in the Auckland C. 1.8. as a detective and for a time was in charge of the women police stationed here. Assistant-Commissioner G. C. Urquhart said today that Inspector Bennett would be transferred to Wellington headquarters. Among her duties would be some responsibility for policewomen.
