EDINBURGH GAMES
Costs Worry Officials
(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) LONDON.
The first meeting of the organising committee of the 1970 Commonwealth Games at Edinburgh had left “misgivings” about planning, “The Times” reported. Edinburgh defeated Christchurch when both applied for the Games last August. Although Edinburgh campaigned for more than a decade to be host city, civic leaders were now worried by the costs that now faced them, said “The Times.” Plans to improve the main stadium for the Games at Meadowbank had been approved. The cost has been estimated at more than £1,000,000. Although the brochure prepared by the Edinburgh Corporation said there would be accommodation for more than 30,000 in the stadium its capacity at present is no more than 12,000. However, temporary seating for 18,000 would bring the stadium up to the required size. Some people concerned with the games would prefer the Murrayfield Stadium which holds 60,000 and have urged that investigations be made into the cost of preparing the stadium for Games standards.
