Counsel Claims Court “Unfair”
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) DJAKARTA, December 21. A special military court in Djakarta was last night accused of being unfair for not trying President Sukarno but instead trying his assistant—the former Air Force chief Omar Dhani.
“Is it fair and just if an assistant to the President is dragged to trial, while the President himself as his superior is not sued?” the defence counsel for Omar Dhani asked the Court. Air Vice-Marshal Omar Dhani, aged 52 is on trial for his life for alleged complicity in last year’s Communist coup attempt. His defence counsel, Dr. Sunario, reading his defence plea, said Dhani was loyal to his superior, President Sukarno, and what he had done was on the order of the President, who so far had never blamed him.
At the beginning counsel described the Court as unlawful and illegal, because it was set up by a regulation which had never been passed by Parliament. He said the Court had no right to try Dhani, and called on it to declare Dhani not guilty and freed from all charges.
He said Dhani was “a noble gentleman” for not trying to
incriminate President Sukarno, who was responsible for what Dhani had done.
