DEFIED BAN ON ISLAND PICNICKING

“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, Dec. 20. An Auckland City Councillor, Mr T. H. Pearce, told the council that he had constantly defied Crown prohibitions on landing or picnicking on Hauraki Gulf islands. He said: “Islands have been closed that were part of our heritage. Young people today cannot go to these islands and picnic in the same way as I used to.” The Crown’s record with gulf islands had been “lamentable.”

“I have constantly defied their notices, which splatter all the islands in the gulf,” he said.

The council decided to take no action without further information, on including the Davis Marine Park (Browns Island) and Motuihe Island in the proposed Government Hauraki Gulf maritime park. It appointed the chairman of the parks and library committee, Mr H. E. Watts, to represent the council in the Government’s interim committee.
