Stewart Island Map
A nevz topographical map of Stewart Island has been prepared by the Department of Lands and Survey. It shows reserves, roads, vehicle and walking tracks and huts. An inset of Oban is included, and enlargements of Halfmoon Bay and a portion of Paterson Inlet are given. A panel on the back of the map describes scenic and recreational features and many island walks. A brief history is given of the discovery and naming of the island and of whaling, sealing, mining and timber milling in the early days. The origins of the fishing and oyster industries are also traced.
The map is prepared from aerial photographs and ground survey reports, and it accurately defines the position of streams, ridges, and the coastline. The southern outline of the island is different from that of previous editions of the map, and some bays were not previously shown. Residents of Stewart Island have helped in ensuring that place names are the ones in common use and are applied to the correct features.
The map, N.Z.M.S. 219, is available from the department’s offices, booksellers and map-selling agencies. It has a scale of one inch to two miles.
