D. J. Townley Has Eight Drives

The Tinwald trainer-driver, D. J. Townley, will have a full book of eight drives on the first night of the Auckland Trotting Club’s cup meeting on Saturday. As well as Castleton’s Gift and Soldier Gal, members of his own team, he will handle King’s Cord, Killadar, Waitaki Hanover, Stephen Water, Roydon Prince and Vista Abbey.

Townley left last evening with his own two horses and Killadar, Calm Autumn, Waitaki Hanover and Towser. He will return south next Sunday and drive at Ashburton on Monday., His drives there will include Boston Billy, Frostibon, Fielder, and Pacing Simba or Newlands. He will then return to Auckland for the second night of the Auckland Cup meeting on Tuesday.

D. G. Jones will drive Ulight and Ranganui at Addington on Saturday before going to Auckland, where he will drive Gilt and Disband. He will be back for the Ashburton meeting, where he will drive members of his own team and also Braebum. Six horses will be flown north on Friday to compete at the Auckland meetihg. They are Disband, Golden Oriole, Rocky Star, Richard Hanover, Gay lee and Fort Nelson.

W. R. Butt will drive Newport Maid at Addington before travelling to Auckland, where

his lone drive so far is Golden Oriole. Butt will drive her on the first two nights, but her owner, M. A. Butt, will handle her on the final night. Rocky Star and Richard Hanover will be driven by J. W. Smolensk!, who will also drive Roydon Frost on the first night. Gaylee and Fort Nelson will be driven by M. A. Skinner. Uteena left early yesterday morning for Picton on her way to Auckland, where she will be driven on Saturday by her trainer, O. M. Quinlan, who will return south for the Ashburton meeting on Monday. No driver has yet been engaged for the other two nights at Auckland. Travel arrangements for some horses are in doubt because of the cancellation of a special flight on Saturday morning. G. B. Noble’s horses went north last evening in the care of D. Mangos, who will drive them on the last two nights of the meeting.
