(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Dec. 20.
The Railways Department today announced it would increase the number of round trips in the Cook Srait ferry service by 25 per cent, to meet the growing demand for freight space. The General Manager of Railways, Mr I. Thomas, said the number of round sailings each week by the Aramoana and the Aranui would be increased from 17 to 21 in February, and later possibly to 23.
The increase will mean there will be departures from Wellington at 11 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and arrivals from Picton at 2.20 a.m. on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Planning another vessel would have to be considered within six months, Mr Thomas slid.
