Cakes For Sailors Held Up By Strike
(New Zealand Press Association/
AUCKLAND, December 20.
Three big Christmas cakes, baked specially by the Gisborne people for the crew of their adopted ship, H.M.N.Z.S. Blackpool, are not likely to reach Singapore until the Qantas strike ends.
8.0.A.C. agreed to fly the cakes to Singapore, without realising that these came under an embargo on perishables, imposed by airlines soon after the strike began. A 8.0.A.C. spokesman said today: “Between flying full with pasengers and Christmas mail, we have no room for perishables. “If we did take them, there would be a possibility of their being off-loaded en route because mail has first priority after passengers.” The R.N.Z.A.F. has not been able to help because it has no further flights to South-east Asia this year. The Blackpool is on the far East station, serving as the iNew Zealand contribution to
the Commonwealth Strategic Reserve. The size of the cakes startled airline officials when they arrived at Auckland yesterday from Gisborne. One is 161 b, the others each 151 b. The cakes will now be stored.
