Authority Objects To Plan For Conditional Use
The Christchurch Regional Planning Authority would object to the council allowing conditional uses for the establishment of an automotive workshop and retail showroom at 8 North road, and a service station and garage at 11 North road, said the authority in a letter received by the Kaiapoi Borough Council on Monday evening. “The establishment of these two conditional uses would result in there being four such centres of activity in less than a quarter of a mile of road,” the letter said. “The two sites would be nearly opposite each other, and one on the western side of the North road would be in the middle of a block that is predominantly residential. “It is doubtful whether there Is any essential need for additional facilities within so short a distance, and the proposals must be regarded as impairing unnecessarily the traffic efficiency of the Main North road.” Another objection was lodged for Higgs Garage, Ltd. The council fixed January 25 as the date for hearing submissions. Camside.—The town-plan-
ning committee reported that the Ministry of Works would discuss with the council the proposed Camside development in connexion with the northern motorway. The council decided to have a residential subdivision and development plan prepared.
Trawl Limited.—Approval was given for the Marine Department to erect a 50ft mast on the north bank of the Waimakariri near its mouth to mark the starting point of a prohibited trawling zone. Slipway.—Appreciation was expressed of the action of the Waimakariri Sailing Club in allowing the public to use its slipway for a trial period. Stray Dogs.—The council decided to give public notice that it would prosecute owners of dogs not kept leashed in the restricted area. Road Work.—The tender of Farrier-Waimak., Ltd., for £5327 10s for resealing and verge sealing on town roads was accepted. Water Supply.—The council decided to defer proposals for improving the Kairaki water supply. A questionnaire sent to residents had produced 20 replies in favour of a better supply, 12 in favour with re-
servations, and six not in favour, the works committee reported, but, as several wells were being sunk, the position might improve. Murphy Park.—Mr R. Sincock was appointed caretaker of Murphy Park, and as the park is now used for competition cricket, the council agreed to carry out regular maintenance.
Mayors. Approval was given for a collection of photographs of mayors of Kaiapoi to be mounted in an album, together with their biographies and photographs of local interest.
Lighting—As a subsidy of only £3 for £4 would be paid, it had decided not to proceed with lighting for the Main North road from the Waimakariri bridge to the borough boundary, the Eyre Counfy Council said. It was decided to seek a meeting with the county council for further discussion.
