Riders Crash; Unhurt
Disaster all but struck the Italian cyclists, Giordano Turrini and Luigi Roncaglia—and the Christchurch Track Cycling Committee—at English Park yesterday afternoon. During a little light training, the Italians crashed. Both fell and worried officials rushed to the scene as Roncaglia lay on the track.
Two local riders, M. W. Litolff (foreground) and P. A. Skilling (at top of banking), were riding with them at the time but neither was involved.
It transpired that the visitors had suffered only cuts and grazes, Roncaglia to his left elbow and shin and to both knees. Turrini grazed only his left arm.
Roncaglia also blew the side out of his rear tyre.
After having the wounds dressed, both came out for another few circuits of the track. They later said, through their interpreter, Mr Claud Veronese, that English Park was “a beautiful track with a good foundation,” but not as steeply banked as they are used to.
They thought it was quite fast—thus affirming the comments of previous visiting champions—and Turrini was interested to hear that the English Park and New Zealand sprint records (for 220 yd) were 12.4 sec and 11.5 sec respectively.
He didn’t say so, but gave the impression that these were within his compass.
