CHRISTMAS PARTIES

The Gold Star Mothers’ Club held its annual Christmas party last week. The president (Mrs E. Paterson) and the vicepresidents (Mesdames V. Scott and L. McKenzie) welcomed the guests. The Mayoress (Mrs G. Manning), cut the Christmas cake. Othere guests included Mrs E. Hart of Australia, Miss E. Neville and Mrs D. Gollan.

Sprays were presented to the special guests. Miss Neville recited a Christmas poem. Mrs Gollan played piano accordian solos and acted as pianist for the carol singing.

Competition winners were Mesdames A. Blackmore and G. Stenhouse. LANGFORD HOUSE The 52 residents and staff of Langford House were entertained at their Christmas party recently by members of the Heathcote Country Women’s Institute choir. The party, which includes a Christmas tea, is held annually at Langford House by the Langford House comforts committee. The Christmas cake was cut by the Mayoress (Mrs G. Manning). Presents were given to each resident and staff member.

Specially invited guests included the Mayor (Mr G. Manning) and Mrs Manning, a former Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane) and Mrs Macfarlane, the chairman of the Aged People’s Welfare Council (Dr H. R. Donald) and Mrs Donald, the Member of

Parliament for Sydenham (Miss M. B. Howard) and a member of the Langford House committee (Mr W. H. Larcombe). Representatives from the Red Cross Society and the Sunnyside Hospital nurses also attended.

TOWNSWOMEN The Woolston Townswomen’s Guild held its Christmas party recently. Many members and specially invited guests were welcomed by the president, Mrs H. A. McDowall.

Mr L. Higgins was master of ceremonies and also sang a bracket of songs. Members of the North guild entertained with songs from “White Horse Inn.” Miss E. Neville gave several recitations, and assisted the drama and singing circle with their presentation of a Christmas story by candlelight LITTLE RIVER

The Little River Garden Club held its Christmas party in the grounds of Miss H. R. Buchanan’s home, “Kinloch.” Mrs J. Evans welcomed members and guests, including about 40 Akaroa Garden Club members.

Entertainment included competitions and a treasure hunt. Presentations were made to Mrs B. Carswell, retiring secretary, and Mrs R. Lee. BECKENHAM The Beckenham-Huntsbury Garden Club’s Christmas party, held in the Returned Servicemen’s Association hall

in Tennyson street, was well attended by members and friends. Songs were sung by Mesdames E. Genn, K. Blunt, D. Barker and Mr D, Bishop. Mrs Genn also accompanied the singers. Two recitations were given by Mrs O. Gee. Members brought gaily wrapped parcels for distribution by the Nurse Maude Association to elderly people living alone. ARANUI

Mrs J. Terras, president of the Aranui Townswomen’s Guild, welcomed about 200 members and guests to the guild’s Christmas party recently. Specially invited guests included Mesdames C. A. Smith, R. Allison, L. Russell and G. A. C. Plumridge.

Entertainment was given by the singing and drama circles, which presented three costumed items, staged with colourful settings and sketches.
