Three New Zealanders have been awarded Harkness Fellowships, of the 10 allocated to Australia and New Zealand. The scholarships are tenable for travel and advanced study in the United States for 1967-68. The awards have been made to Professor L. F. Phillips, of the University of Canterbury, in physical chemistry; Mr 1. P. Puketapu, an inspector of the State Services Commission at Wellington, in administration; and Mr W. J. Whineray of Auckland, in business management. The Harkness Fellowships of the Commonwealth Fund of New York are prestige awards which are tenable for travel and advanced study in the United States for any period between 12 and 21 months. They are awarded to persons under 35 years of age who have shown that, in addition to outstanding ability clearly demonstrated in their own fields, they have concern for the broader interests of their community and show promise of being able to play a significant role in the national development. Professor Phillips, a graduate of the University of Canterbury, was elected to the first personal chair created at the university and has had an outstanding record as a scholar, research worker, and athlete.
He plans to spend the major part of his time working with Professor L. Brewer at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, Berkeley, California, mainly on chemical equilibria at high temperature.

He moved to business management in 1964, the year in which he completed as a parttime student his B.Com. degree. He plans to undertake advanced study in business management, probably at the Harvard School of Business Administration. Mr Puketapu, a graduate of Victoria University of Wellington, was a member of the staff of the Department of Maori Affairs from 1953 to 1965, before joining the staff of the State Services Commission.
